Using Gaia GPS in Australia
Gaia GPS is a nifty mapping app aimed at people heading outdoors, and out of phone coverage. Its killer feature is the ability to download maps along a planned route. This is a quick way to prepare for your trip and conserves space on your phone.
Out of the box Gaia GPS has a map layer for New Zealand using LINZ. This was super handy but now that I’m back in Australia I’d like to keep using the app here. Turns out it’s pretty easy to add new maps to the app.
I’ve prepared the ‘tilejson’ files for Queensland (QTOPO), New South Wales (SIX) and Tasmania (LIST) so you don’t need to fuss around. Just download the file on your phone and open it with the
import file option in Gaia GPS.
As I go hiking elsewhere I’ll add to this list.
