A Knotty Tree Strap

Tree straps are an essential component of hammock suspension. Using webbing instead of rope to wrap around the tree protects the bark and the tree itself. Sometimes this doesn’t work out. Maybe you’ve forgotten your tree straps, or met some people who don’t know to use them. What then? I like to use the following knot, it evenly distributes the load of a hammock over several strands of rope.

Begin as if you were tying a bowline around the tree.

Where you would pass the end of the rope through the loop and finish of the bowline, instead go through the loop several times while wrapping around the tree.

Finally, finish off the knot just as you would a normal bowline.
